Monday 5 May 2025--Leaving Pelee Island in early morning fog. I needed a spot to lay over for a night, and in the end chose Kingsville, which isn't very far--I'll have a long drive tomorrow. I have time to take strolls around the downtowns of Leamington and Kingsville, neither of which is very big or very interesting.
Kingsville's most famous native son is conservationist Jack Miner (1865-1944). He was an early practitioner of banding birds, and was the first to demonstrate the migratory routes of geese and ducks. His ideas about the natural world were deeply colored by his Christian fundamentalism; he rejected evolutionary theory, and ascribed a moral superiority to species that practice monogamy. He disapproved of predators entirely, and thought they should be eradicated. There is nevertheless an appreciation for his contributions.
I have dinner and a pint at the Banded Goose, home of Jack's burgers, presumably made from monogamous and non-predatory beef.
