Saturday 10 May 2025--It's two and a half hours on the ferry back to Charlevoix, then an hour and a quarter north, across the Mackinac Bridge, to St Ignace, where I board a ferry bound for Mackinac Island. I'm definitely on foot this time--cars are not allowed on Mackinac. In my entire bus-driving career, I drove one trip to Mackinac, and got only a few hours on-island, as I was housed on the mainland. Like Niagara-on-the-Lake, it's a place I've long thought about visiting on my own. I have three nights here.
Wawatam Light, St Ignace. There's no entry for this light at Lighthouse Friends, because it's a fake. It was built in 1998 for the welcome center in Monroe, Michigan, just north of the Ohio state line, and was moved to St Ignace in 2004. It has an actual Fresnel lens and is designated officially as an aid to navigation, but in this era of GPS navigation, it wasn't built to fill any real need.
