Friday 23 May 2025--I'm headed toward Kingston, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, today, and Google wants me to drive south to Oshawa, east of Toronto, and take the 401 from there. I had enough of the 401 in my bus driving days. I take route 7 instead, o'er hill and dale, through the countryside. The road passes through Peterborough, which gives me a chance to view the lift lock on the Trent-Severn Canal in action. The two chambers are mounted on enormous hydraulic pistons; the weight of a foot more of water in the upper one pushes the one down and the other up. What strikes me is how quiet it is--there's no motor.
From Kingston, I take the ferry over to Wolfe Island. I spent a night in the Hotel Wolfe Island in November 2023; I have two nights this time.
