Thursday 22 May 2025--Drizzly day. Continuing along the Georgian Bay coast, I pass through the town of Thornbury, then turn inland to visit a cidery that also distills apple brandy, up on the heights above the escarpment. They don't happen to have any brandy available at the moment, but I buy a bottle of sparkling cider. Down to the coast again, through Collingwood, to Wasaga Beach. There is an upscale neighborhood at one end of town, and the usual sort of beach town ticky-tack around the public beach areas at the other end. A historic site is dedicated to the charred remains of HMS Nancy, at one point the only British ship on the upper Great Lakes during the War of 1812, but of course it isn't open for the season yet.
I turn east, inland, and in an hour am in Orillia, on the shores of Lake Couchiching, where I'm spending the night. I've made an expensive mistake: somehow I made my hotel reservation for yesterday. There's no problem getting a room tonight, but I've ended up paying for two nights. I have dinner and pints at Couchiching Craft Brewing Company. I didn't get as much time to see the town as I'd planned, but that's okay--it's mostly just a stop on the way home.
